Railways retrieve over 4, 000 acres land from encroachers in five years

Islamabad, Senate Standing Committee on Railways was informed on Thursday that the authority has retrieved over 4, 000 acres land from land grabbers for the past five years.
The retrieved property’s estimated worth is more than Rs15 billion. The committee recommended formation of separate units to retrieve Railway land from encroachers and grabbers.
The committee has also sought details of Railway’s lease land and the land currently occupied by land grabbers.
The committee also sought details of the Rahim Yar Khan incident. The meeting headed by Chairman Asad Ali Khan was held at the Parliament House Islamabad.
The chairman Senate body observed that there is difference in opinion of Railway police and Railway officials regarding elimination of land grabbers. He said the Railway police told that it takes action against encroachers on the directions of Railway authorities whereas the railway officials say police remain present everywhere.
The railway officials informed the committee that Pakistan Railways has 170,976 acres land and around 4,000 are under the occupation of land grabbers. Most of the railways land is in Lahore which is more than 100,000. Besides, the Pakistan Railways has rented shops across Pakistan.
IG Railways informed the committee that railway tracks don’t lie in the jurisdiction of Railway police but still the police take action when received complaints against encroachers.
